14 Patterns Of Biophilic Design- Terapin Bright Green

The whole concept of biophilia is stimulating, exciting and thought provoking in so many ways. My own personal desire to live a safe, calm, content and meaningful life is one small aspect of how I feel using the biophilia strategies could guide and steer me through life. However, when you consider the vast wealth of opportunity afforded within this concept it is a wonder that all organisations, governments and decision makers are not tuned in and governed by these principles. It is now clearly known and correlated that the general well being of the population is beneficial in so many ways, from economic input to the overall improvement in physical and mental health, which in itself has a huge impact on society as a whole. The individual elements within the biophilia strategy can be broken down and utilised in either micro proportions or on a much larger scale. Surely it is better for example in a working environment, for people to feel happy and calm within their professional space. This cannot fail but to improve productivity, attendance rates and the general landscape of any organisation. We could expand this enquiry into all aspects of our lives and the limits of opportunity are endless. Imagine if children are surrounded by the subtlety and comfort biophilic designs bring to any space. I can only predict that issues say in mental health, which are at an all time high in younger people, must respond in a positive direction when having the comfort blanket of nature and all the aesthetics described in the concept in their everyday environment. As a landscape architect I feel it is imperative to always have at the fore when designing any space, the biophilia principles with equal significance to our standard design brief. Surely it is our responsibility to introduce and suggest the benefits of such design strategies to clients who's only request is to for functionality or profitability.
